SteelJaw the Spotted Hyena by SteelJaw SteelJaw the Spotted Hyena by SteelJaw
She's finally complete! I technically finished her on Jan 1st, but it took me a while to get pics taken. She's a lot of firsts- first resin head, first rubber pawpads, first fullsuit, first airbrushed suit- and she's got a lot of flaws. I'm still proud of her, though I'm sure I'm going to have to make changes/alterations after her big outing at FC as I stress-test my new techniques.

Wire-wrapped skull on her necklace by the VERY talented Veridian Lupine!

I'll scrap this after I get a proper collage done. Just wanted something up so folks knew who to look for at FC.

Nope, I'm from California! A group of friends paid for me to go out to RMFC. I'm glad, too, that was fun!! If you're going to FC in 2013 we should hang out tho :D

Sadly, no FC for us this year. :< I have to cut back on traveling and out of state cons, otherwise, I would be there!

I'd love to go to more cons, but it's quite a ways from me and travel is expensive. Not to mention it takes me away from work. We'll see about it in the future, though. I think this year it was the same weekend as my local convention, and if that's the case next year I'll most likely stay local. :<

Yeah, I'll have to start from scratch. The problems with the anatomy started off in the base sculpt, so I would have to mold a whole new resin base. But it's a learning experience, and more practice!

FINALLY a Hyena that doesn't look like a dog. Thank jeebus.

Can I ask though, what is that GORGEOUS fur you used? I must have some!

Many thanks! :D

It's Monterey Mills Palomino Fox. I shaved and airbrushed the entire suit to get the color and texture variation. The fur was nice to work with, shaved well, has a great look and feel, and is strong. When it's shaved, the color changes due to different colors for the guard hairs and undercoat. Hides seams well too! Really nice stuff!

Thanks so much! I've been looking for this color for the longest time and you've been the only person to get back to me on it. Gah!~
Your suit looks wonderful, too. I really like the padding, most of the time it looks weird and wonky.
Thanks again, I'm definately ordering some of this wonderful fabric :D

My original thought was a hyena (how I stumbled to this picture) XD
But now I'm thinking maybe an African Wild Dog, or cheetah.

Who knows. XD I have yet to come to a final decision.

All 3 of those are awesome ideas! You'll want to do something with some shaggy fur, though, since shaving the fur changes the color of the fur. It's also a thick fur, and will add a LOT of bulk to your form. Things to keep in mind when picking a species for the fur. :>

Many thanks! I stared, for weeks, at references. I wanted to get her as close to the real thing as the human headshape would allow. :D So many people seem to just do hyenas as dogs with spots. :<

YES! That work and careful study really shows here. I have to agree spotted dogs are what everyone else seems to think hyenas are.
